Reni Commercial Port was founded in 1816 and is located on a left bank of the Danube – one of the largest rivers in Europe.
Settlements, that formed Reni, are known to exist since quite long time ago. They often changed their names, depending on the ones who owned them. Like most of the cities in Bessarabia, Reni often passed from one hands to another, sharing the fate of entire Danube streamside region.
The Slavic word “ren” means pier. It is considered to be the origin of the city name.
In 1862 the port was occupied by Turkish invaders, who established it as administrative center for tax collection from native residents.
In the beginning of XX century Reni Port continues to develop. Russian entrepreneurs make huge investment to improve its technical basis. Further destiny of Reni is closely connected to Russian-Turkish wars of XVIII – XIX centuries.
Every time Reni had been taken over by Russian troops, many Bulgarian and Greek settlers had been coming there to escape Turkish enslavement. After Russian-Turkish war of 1806-1812, according to Bucharest treaty, Bessarabia became a part of Russian Empire. This period is considered to be the time when Reni was actually found. Natural bank of the Danube was used as a berthage. Goods turnover was low and often limited to spicery, wine and tobacco, delivered to Bessarabia. Bread was the port’s main export thread.
The port, which started to handle ocean-liners along with sea-crafts after Kiliya creek had been deepened, has received a boost to its development after foundation of Russko-Dunayskoe steamship-line. During the days before First World War, Reni Port has handled a record amount of bread cargo, which was more then 150 thousand tons.
After Bessarabia reunion with Soviet Russia in 1940 soviet ports along the bank of the Danube, including Reni, were passed to Chernomorskoye steamship-line. But everyday activities of Reni dockers were interrupted by Nazi intrusion.
Proper development of the port has started only after Danube streamside region had been liberated. On November 5, 1944, first hoisting crane began its operations. In 1958 amount of cargo trans-shipment has become 5.7 times bigger then in 1945. Mechanization level of cargo-handling has increased from 25% to 99.4%, productivity has increased in more then 4 times.
During Soviet period, Reni port has been a leading port among others of Danube streamside region. Rani has been hadling about 15 million tons of cargo yearly, more then any other Danube streamside port. Reni Commercial Port has been one of top six ports of the USSR sea power.
